Ceuta strains as thousands arrive, minister seeks help
Ceuta is still trying to restore normality after thousands of migrants arrived at the end of July. On 25 September, minister Félix Bolaños called on Spain’s autonomous regions to offer practical help. Speaking in Bilbao, he said the response must follow the law and show humanity.
Bolaños said thousands of public-sector staff posted in Ceuta were doing extraordinary work to tackle the situation. He described it as complex and said it would take days for the city to return to normal.
The minister was asked about a call by government delegate Marisol Garmendia for the Basque Government to make an extra effort to take in minors in Ceuta. He said every proposed solution, including that one, was being examined and worked on.
Bolaños said solidarity could not stop at public statements. Public administrations, he argued, should make themselves available for what Spain’s government needs in Ceuta.
