Mallorca parliament reopens Ceuta row next Tuesday

The Balearic Parliament in Palma, Mallorca, will debate Ceuta’s Spanish sovereignty next Tuesday after Vox tabled a new motion. Opposition parties question whether the chamber is the right place for the argument. Vox spokesperson Manuela Cañadas announced the proposal on Wednesday after the Board of Spokespersons meeting.

José María García of Unidas Podemos called the planned debate a “political anomaly” for the Balearics. He asked whether MPs would next debate the Spanish identity of the Perejil islet or the Chafarinas.

García said nobody disputes that Perejil is Spanish. He argued that parliament’s “valuable time” should instead go on housing, mobility and environmental issues.

Més per Menorca MP Josep Castells said the chamber had debated a similar PP initiative a few sittings ago. He suggested, ironically, a permanent committee on Ceuta so such matters would no longer be brought before the full parliament.
