Ibiza's Chambers faces a US extradition hearing

Fergie Chambers, held since his arrest in Ibiza in July, goes before Spain’s Audiencia Nacional at 12.00 on Monday. The pro-Palestinian multimillionaire activist must say whether he accepts extradition to the United States. If he refuses, the judge will decide whether he stays in custody or is released.

The judge will formally set out the reasons for the US request and explain Chambers’ rights. The hearing follows the Spanish government’s move on Tuesday to formalise an initial stage allowing the court to continue examining the extradition request.

Chambers will be accompanied by his lawyer, former judge Baltasar Garzón, who maintains his client is innocent and says the case shows signs of political persecution by the US administration. Chambers’ partner, actress Stella Schnabell, said the couple have a child and that she is three months pregnant. She said he could miss their baby’s first year despite not having been convicted of a crime.
