Mallorca: Valldemossa Charterhouse wall cuts criticised

In Valldemossa, Mallorca, a private owner is cutting openings in the Charterhouse cloister wall to fit wooden doors. Heritage group ARCA warned on Saturday, 10 October, that the work does not meet the building’s protection rules.

According to ARCA, the cuts extend up the wall towards round windows. The group says the wooden doors are unlike the cloister’s original doors and appear not to match the size of its existing openings. It argues that they undermine the unity of the Charterhouse, which is protected as a site of cultural interest. Several private owners share the site with the Bishopric.

ARCA says it does not know whether the work has the required permits or is being overseen by experts. It has asked the Council of Mallorca and Valldemossa Town Council to stop the work if necessary and if it lacks municipal permission.
