Mallorca chicken farm challenges sick-hen photos
On Mallorca, images that animal welfare groups say show sick hens, dead birds, eggs with mites and cockroaches prompt a complaint against a chicken farm in Manacor. The operator, Avícola Son Perot, says there is no proof the pictures were taken at its Mirabó site. On 20 October, it responds to the complaint filed by Arde and Satya Animal with the Balearic public prosecutor’s office.
Farm disputes the images
The company says the images’ origin has not been verified. It also rejects the conclusions of a veterinary report submitted by the groups. Its head vet says some pictures could show earlier problems that have since been resolved.
Avícola Son Perot says whoever entered the farm broke rules designed to protect animal health. Its legal team is considering civil and criminal action.
Empty sheds and a new farm plan
The company says Mirabó’s sheds are now empty while routine cleaning and maintenance take place. It says it formally notified the Balearic Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment of the process in October.
Meanwhile, an environmental permit is being sought for a new farm at Son Brau in Manacor. Avícola Son Perot questions the timing of the complaint. The groups’ allegations are now with prosecutors; whether the published images show Mirabó remains disputed.
