2,175 Balearic pupils run against childhood leukaemia
2,175 children from five schools in the Balearic Islands run on Friday, 16 October, to support research into childhood leukaemia. They are taking part in the 12th La Vuelta al Cole charity race, organised by the Unoentrecienmil Foundation. Across Spain, 308,559 children from 838 schools are involved.
The race reaches beyond Friday
The previous edition raised more than 1.1 million euros, the foundation says. That money has supported research into treatments that work better and leave children with fewer lasting effects.
Schools also receive materials to help pupils understand what leukaemia can mean for a child: treatment, hair loss, isolation and time away from class. The work begins weeks before the run and continues through the school year.
Sergio is back in class
The foundation points to Sergio, a six-year-old from Cáceres. He stopped wanting to play football and suffered severe leg pain before months of tests led to a diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. He returned to school in September, though his treatment and recovery continue.
The next race is scheduled for 20 November, World Children’s Day.
