Mallorca Christ statue: group fights possible demolition
In Felanitx, Mallorca, the Cristo Rey de Sant Salvador statue faces possible demolition: Abogados Cristianos filed an administrative complaint on Wednesday, 21 October, to try to stop it. The group sent its complaint to the State Secretariat for Democratic Memory and Mallorca Island Council. It has not yet taken the case to court.
The Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory has agreed to consider a request from private individuals and the group Memòria de Mallorca. They want the statue added to a state list of symbols deemed contrary to democratic memory. That could lead to its removal or demolition, but no decision on the statue is reported.
Abogados Cristianos says the statue was inaugurated on 1 July 1934, during the Second Republic, and stands on private land belonging to the Diocese of Mallorca. It also says the statue was not included in a Balearic Government list of such symbols in 2019.
The group wants any permission or order to demolish, move or alter the statue suspended while the matter is considered. It has asked Mallorca Island Council to begin the process of protecting it as an Asset of Cultural Interest, or, failing that, as a Listed Asset. If the authorities do not secure its preservation, the group says it will seek protection through the courts.
