Mallorca to trial drug-free care for chronic pain

Mallorca: Health centres in Son Gotleu, Palma, are set to trial care without drugs for people with chronic pain unrelated to cancer at the end of October. The plan comes as a Socialist MP says some patients wait more than a year for treatment through the public health service.

Balearic health minister Manuela García announced the pilot in parliament on 6 October. She said the Health Ministry would assess whether to extend the approach across the primary care network.

The announcement followed a question from Socialist MP Patricia Gómez about the pain unit at Son Espases Hospital. Gómez said patients described it as overwhelmed. García said the hospital also offers medicines, interventional procedures, psychological treatment and advanced therapies. She said the unit had been collecting data since 2024.

García said a pain unit is due to open at Can Misses Hospital on Eivissa before the end of the year. She described Eivissa as the only island still without one.
