Cinema a la Fresca brings silent-film classics to Palma
Cinema a la Fresca in Palma, Mallorca, will screen two landmark silent films as part of its outdoor programme: Robert Wiene’s Das Cabinet des Dr Caligari on Monday 24 August and Buster Keaton’s The General on Wednesday 2 September. Palma City Council runs the annual series, which began on 3 August and ends with Keaton’s film.
The programme comprises 15 feature films and seven shorts. Screenings take place at 21.00 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, mainly in Ses Estacions Park, before moving to Plaça Francesc Garcia Orell for the final week.
Wiene’s 1920 German expressionist film stars Conrad Veidt and Werner Krauss and follows a hypnotist who uses a sleepwalker to carry out murders. Its Cinema a la Fresca showing has been arranged with Inselradio Mallorca and will feature live music from DJ Raphael Marionneau.
Keaton co-directed and starred in The General with Clyde Bruckman. The comedy centres on a locomotive chase during the Civil War and draws on an event from 1862.
The remaining programme includes Zach Cregger’s Weapons, the dialogue-free animated film Flow: un mundo que salvar by Gints Zibalodis, and Juana Macías’s Las chicas de la estación. In the final week, Plaça Francesc Garcia Orell will also host Héctor Escandell’s Es gegant des Vedrà on Monday 31 August and Un like de Bob Trevino.
Short films still scheduled include Horrorscope, Coin Coin, La innocència and Charlie. The first two are presented with the Mecal festival, while Charlie is included with Majordocs.
