In Palma, Mallorca, the city band opens its 60th-anniversary season with the first of 12 concerts on Friday, 23 October. The performance starts at 19.30 at the Higher Conservatory of Music of the Balearic Islands. The series runs until 7 May, Palma City Council says.

José Enrique Martínez Esteve conducts the opener. The first half brings Ruperto Chapí’s prelude to La Revoltosa, Gabriel Oliver’s Fat and Antonio Sánchez Pedro’s Miscelánea. The band then plays Symphony III for David by American composer Kimberly Archer.

The next concert is on 30 October. Across the season, the programme brings together current players, former members, international instrumentalists and new talent. Beyond the conservatory, the band plans educational concerts linked to social-awareness campaigns. It will also keep playing in Palma’s streets, with appearances expected at Palma Dansa and the Day of Families. Its 60th birthday falls on 22 December.
