Ciutadella ferries could switch off generators at berth

Ferries at the outer harbour of Ciutadella, Menorca, could switch off their generators at berth: work starts on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, on a shore-power supply — electricity delivered from the quay. The Balearic Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle says the system will let ships keep their onboard services running without using fossil-fuelled auxiliary engines to make electricity.

Less exhaust and noise at the quay

The system aims to improve air quality around the harbour by reducing emissions from ships, including nitrogen and sulphur oxides and airborne particles. It is also expected to cut the noise and vibration made by generators while ferries are docked.

Which ferries can plug in?

The installation will connect the harbour to the local power grid and adjust the supply for each ship. That matters because Spain’s grid runs at 50 Hz, while some ships use 60 Hz. Cables will connect each ferry to the quay during its stop and be removed before departure.

Ferries will need compatible connections and electrical equipment on board. They can use power from the quay only once the work is complete and the system is in service.
