Ciutadella rape trial: prosecutors seek 52 years
52 years in prison: that is the sentence prosecutors seek as a man accused of raping and abusing his partner in Ciutadella, Menorca, goes on trial on Wednesday, 21 October. The Second Chamber of the Balearic Islands Provincial Court is due to hear the case at 10.00. Prosecutors are also seeking 62,945 euros in compensation.
According to the prosecution, the man took the woman into his home on 12 May 2023. They began a relationship about a week later. It lasted less than a month, during which he allegedly controlled and belittled her and abused her physically, sexually and psychologically.
Prosecutors say he attacked her on 17 May after she did not want to have sex, restrained her with tape and raped her. Days later, they allege, he tied her with rope, repeatedly struck her with a belt and raped her again. The attacks and restraints continued over the following weeks, according to the prosecution.
He faces accusations of four rapes, habitual abuse and degrading insults. Prosecutors say the woman suffered numerous physical injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder that took 280 days to stabilise.
