In Palma, Mallorca, a 97-year-old’s memory of running to an air-raid shelter when sirens sounded drives a fresh call to protect her former home on Monday, 2 November 2026. Joana Maria Llull says she was frightened when she had to seek cover there as a child. The Association for the Revitalisation of Old Town Centres (ARCA) wants the building officially listed and protected.

The building stands at 18 Calle Miquel Santandreu, on the corner of Calle Joan Alcover in the Foners neighbourhood. Llull says she lived on the ground floor because of her father’s work. She recalls that the shelter was built in 1936, when the Civil War began. It had two main ways in, one from each building entrance, and an emergency exit into the courtyard, she says.

ARCA first called for protection last week, when it suspected the building might contain a bunker. After speaking to Llull, the group is renewing its request. It says many such shelters have disappeared and plans to send her account to Palma City Council, the Consell de Mallorca and the Ministry for Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory.
