Mallorca digs for Civil War missing move to private land

Excavation teams return to Son Servera, Mallorca, on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, to search for people who disappeared during the Civil War. Work continues at the municipal cemetery and will also extend to several private plots in the town. The Balearic government has resumed the search under its fifth graves plan.

Specialists first examined several areas of the cemetery in April, using historical research and testimony collected beforehand. They will now investigate further sites at the cemetery and on private land identified through the available documents and accounts.

If human remains are found, the teams will follow the established procedures to recover, examine and identify them.

In July, archaeologists searched Comellar Fondo in Son Servera and ruled out a mass grave in the area examined. The work is being carried out by a joint team from the Sociedad de Ciencias Aranzadi and Atics.

After earlier operations in Ibiza and Formentera, the government says it will continue investigating the cases, identify victims, return them to their families and secure a dignified burial.
