Mallorca: Bid to reopen Palma’s Civil War air-raid shelter

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Beneath Palau Reial and de la Victòria streets in Palma, Mallorca, a Civil War air-raid shelter has five sealed entrances: a local man wants the Balearic Parliament to consider reopening it. He made the request in writing on Monday, 5 October. First, he wants to get inside and check its condition.

The man has researched and documented the city’s Civil War shelters for more than 25 years. In 1997, he entered this one through a private doorway in the basement of Can Sales. He says it was in “good condition” at the time. That doorway was later bricked up when Can Sales became offices for the Balearic Parliament. It stood in what is now the parking area.

He has repeatedly proposed a new entrance through unused council premises on Costa de Sant Domingo. Under his plan, the former entrance on Palau Reial would serve as an emergency exit. He says Palma City Council has viewed the idea positively but has taken no concrete steps. An inspection would let him assess whether the Costa de Sant Domingo entrance could be reopened.
