Mallorca hospital plans three new clean rooms

On Mallorca, Son Espases University Hospital in Palma is adding three clean rooms by the end of 2026, backed by an investment of nearly €1 million. On 2 October, the Balearic Islands Department of Health said the facilities should save around half a million euros a year on medicines. Clean rooms keep dust, particles and microorganisms in the air at extremely low levels so cell therapies can be processed under sterile conditions.

One room will allow the hospital to make cytostatic medicines used to treat cancer and autoimmune diseases. It will cover 40 square metres and cost €382,230. Making the drugs on site should save about €230,000 a year, the department said.

Son Espases has also invested €417,128 in a second clean room, a cryopreservation room and a quality-control laboratory for its haematology service. The clean room will cover 20 square metres and be used to prepare treatments for blood disorders. The new facilities will allow the hospital to increase its use of CAR-T therapy.

CAR-T treatment alters a patient’s own T cells so they can recognise and attack cancer cells. The department says it is especially valuable for patients over 65 whose disease returns and who cannot have a transplant.
