Mallorca: Man arrested over alleged rape after job offer

Palma, Mallorca: A woman calls for help from a terrace after a man who offered her cleaning work allegedly rapes her in his flat. On Monday afternoon, the man calls the police to accuse her of theft. Officers instead arrest him after watching videos she secretly filmed.

The woman tells Spain’s National Police she had been handing out CVs when rain drove her into a shop. The man approached her there and said she could start cleaning his flat that same day.

She says he raped her while she was cleaning a room. When she objected, he pushed her onto a bed, held her down and threatened to kill her. She escaped onto the terrace and shouted for help. A neighbour heard her, but a language barrier meant he did not realise she wanted him to call the police.

The man then threatened to throw her from the terrace unless she came back inside, she says. Once inside, she secretly recorded videos showing him partly undressed and, according to police, refusing to let her leave.

When officers arrived, the man said she had entered his flat to steal and would not leave. He questioned whether they would believe her because she was an immigrant. Police watched the videos and arrested him on suspicion of sexual assault and unlawful detention.
