Mallorca climate row: €140m aid sparks dispute
A €140 million transition-aid bill is at the centre of a climate row in Palma, Mallorca, where the regional government and the PSIB traded accusations in Parliament on Wednesday. Energy Minister Alejandro Sáenz de San Pedro said the Govern is taking action against climate change. The opposition party accused it of embracing climate-change denial.
Sáenz de San Pedro said the government has a substantial team of specialists in its climate-change service, working with specific policies and resources. He said his department had rewritten the energy-transition plan, which he said the PSIB had left in a drawer.
The minister also pointed to more than €140 million paid in transition aid and €2 million invested in climate refuges.
PSIB MP Carles Bona said the government cannot choose whether hot weather arrives, but is responsible for how people cope with it. He cited air-conditioning problems in health and education centres, as well as a lack of trees in public spaces.
Bona said President Marga Prohens calls decarbonisation non-negotiable, but argued that her government has made different choices when faced with the energy transition or climate-change denial.
