Mallorca clinic protests planned as unions warn of strike
On Mallorca, private healthcare workers plan to protest outside Clínica Rotger at 11.00 on Wednesday 14 October. Unions warn that a strike could follow if talks over pay and working conditions fail to make progress. UGT, CCOO, Satse and Usae say employers are blocking a new agreement.
Pay and sick leave at the heart of the dispute
The unions say an offer made by employers at the last negotiating meeting on 30 September would weaken workers’ rights. They object to proposed checks on sick leave and pay rises they say would leave staff worse off in real terms. They also say staffing is too thin and workloads are growing.
More protests planned
The unions plan further protests outside Hospital Sant Joan de Déu on 21 October and Hospital Cruz Roja on 28 October. Both are due to start at 11.00.
They call the gatherings a first response to the stalled talks. If employers hold their position, the unions say protests will spread to other hospitals across the Balearic Islands. They have not ruled out a strike in private healthcare if the negotiations make no significant progress.
