Mallorca clock change: 3am becomes 2am on Sunday

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

On Mallorca, Spain, the clocks go back an hour in the early hours of Sunday 25 October: at 03.00, it becomes 02.00. The change brings back winter time. It is the last switch listed in Spain’s current ministerial order, but it is unlikely to be the last one that happens.

Why the clock changes are not ending

Spain’s government proposed in 2025 that the seasonal clock changes should end in 2026. It argued that they save little energy and harm health and daily life. But ending them needs the backing of the Council of the European Union, which represents member governments, and there has been no progress.

An earlier European Commission attempt stalled in 2019 because EU countries could not agree on whether to let each one settle on a permanent time.

Keep switching or stay on winter time?

Physicist Jorge Mira Pérez of the University of Santiago de Compostela argues that a country with distinct seasons needs both winter and summer time. José María Martín Olalla of the University of Seville also favours keeping the switch. He says complaints about it are occasional and that conditions differ across EU countries.

César Martín, honorary president of Spain’s Association for the Rationalisation of Working Hours, takes the opposite view. He wants the clocks to stay on winter time, arguing that it is better for health and sleep. For now, Mallorca’s clocks still go back on Sunday.
