Mallorca clock change: 03:00 becomes 02:00 on Sunday
Mallorca, Spain, turns its clocks back on Sunday 25 October: at 03:00, the time becomes 02:00 and winter time begins. This is the last change listed in Spain’s current ministerial order, but it is unlikely to be the last one people make. The European Union has already published dates for further changes from 2027 to 2031.
Why the clocks still change
Spain pushed last year to end the twice-yearly switch in 2026, arguing that there was no evidence of substantial energy savings and that changing the clocks harmed health and daily life. The effort has made no progress at European level.
A European Commission proposal has been before the Council of the European Union since 2018. It would let member states decide whether to keep changing their clocks or choose a permanent time, but their governments have yet to agree. A European Union study of the effects of clock changes is still under way, with no clear completion date.
The argument over a permanent time
Physicists Jorge Mira Pérez of the University of Santiago de Compostela and José María Martín Olalla of the University of Seville favour keeping the seasonal change. They argue that it helps clock time fit the different seasons.
César Martín of the Association for the Rationalisation of Spanish Working Hours takes the opposite view. He wants winter time to stay all year, saying it is better for health and rest. For now, there is no decision to end the clock changes.
