Mallorca coal power set to end as last units cleared

Mallorca’s last two working coal units can now close: Endesa has permission to shut units 3 and 4 at the Es Murterar power station in Alcúdia, Mallorca. The company announced the approval on 29 October 2026. Once the units shut, coal-fired electricity generation on the island will end.

The closure does not mean Es Murterar will stop producing power. Two gas turbines with a combined capacity of 75 MW will remain in operation. Endesa says the coal units have reached the end of their working lives. The electricity system operator backed their closure, finding that they could be retired without putting the security of supply at risk.

Endesa plans to disconnect the coal units from the grid and then dismantle them. It also plans specialist training to help local workers take part in that work.

The site could later make room for renewable energy, electricity storage and other energy technology. Endesa has given no timetable for those plans.
