Mallorca’s last coal power units cleared to close
Mallorca’s last two working coal units can close: the Balearic government authorised Endesa on 29 October 2026 to shut down units 3 and 4 at Es Murterar power station in Alcúdia, Mallorca. The decision clears the way for the end of coal-fired electricity generation on the island. Endesa has yet to disconnect the units from the grid.
The Balearic government’s Department of Business, Energy and Self-Employment says the grid operator found the closure would not put electricity supplies across the Balearic Islands at risk. Endesa says Es Murterar will keep two gas turbines running. Together they have a capacity of 75 MW and are intended to help keep the islands’ electricity system stable.
Endesa plans to disconnect and then dismantle the coal units. Renewable energy and electricity storage are among the possible new uses being studied for the site. Specialist training is also planned to help local workers take part in the work.
