Mallorca's last coal units close as cable row grows

Mallorca's last two coal-fired power units close for good on 29 October at the es Murterar station in Alcúdia, Mallorca. Environmental group GOB welcomes the closure of groups 3 and 4 as “good news” for moving electricity generation away from fossil fuels. It also says the shutdown strengthens its case against a second power cable.

The units were already out of service. They had been kept in reserve for possible faults or power cuts. GOB argues that the need for the second cable — or any urgency to build it — has never been shown.

The group says an environmental impact study had already found that electricity could not pass through the ducts leading to es Murterar. A different entry is planned, requiring work that could be finished in two or three years. GOB says Mallorca will operate without the electricity planned from the second cable during that time. It wants work on the cable stopped and a shift towards renewable energy instead.
