Mallorca coast: 1,600 checks, 16 infringement reports
Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, records 1,600 coastal checks and 16 infringement reports between 4 June and 16 October. The Balearic Coastal Control and Surveillance Service checks charter boats, anchoring and the protection of posidonia seagrass. Its work on Mallorca also produces 91 inspection records.
Checks across the Balearics
The service records 1,771 checks across the Balearic Islands, including 77 on Menorca and 94 on Eivissa and Formentera combined. It presented the figures at a meeting of the Balearic Nautical Round Table on Thursday, 22 October.
Separately, the Balearic Directorate-General for Ports and Maritime Transport had opened 95 sanction proceedings by 16 October 2026. About 130 more, concerning incidents this summer, had yet to be opened.
A licence for hired small motorboats
Since 1 October, anyone operating a hired motorboat up to five metres long with a maximum power of 15 CV has needed the appropriate boating qualification or licence. The exemption still applies to private use of these boats. The authorities say the change follows a high number of incidents and accidents involving such rentals.
The meeting also examined irregular charter practices, including commercial trips on privately registered boats and boarding at unauthorised places. Investigations into two companies advertising privately registered boats for hire led to the adverts being removed. A separate sanction proceeding over the hire of boats in that private-use category is under way.
