Mallorca coast: 3,252 kilos of rubbish cleared

Clean-up crews removed 3,252 kilos of rubbish from Mallorca’s waters and coast in August. Across the Balearic Islands, the total reached 6,328 kilos — an average of 204 kilos a day. The Balearic Ministry for the Sea and Water Cycle released the figures.

Plastic made up half of everything collected, at 3,192 kilos. Wood followed with 2,061 kilos, while crews also removed 714 kilos of other waste, 213 kilos of organic waste, 137 kilos of vegetation and eight kilos of oils.

Beach boats collected 3,069 kilos and coastal boats picked up 3,258 kilos. Eivissa accounted for 1,547 kilos, Menorca for 1,138 kilos and Formentera for 391 kilos.

The Mallorca teams also responded to five cases involving drifting boats. They removed a metal buoy and a piece of wooden hull, and rescued a live goat.

On Menorca, crews cleared tree trunks and a build-up of plastic, and dealt with spilled diesel. On Eivissa and Formentera, they attended a drifting boat, removed a work raft and a dead dolphin, and responded to oil traces.

The service also recorded more jellyfish in bathing areas, collecting between 15 and 20 kilos of animals from different species. No Portuguese man o’ war was found in the Balearics. Teams handled eight alerts during August, including five from the 112 emergency service and Maritime Rescue.
