Ibiza cocaine case: councillor's husband reportedly held

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

A reported arrest in a cocaine case puts Eivissa City Council, on the Spanish island of Ibiza, under pressure on 4 October. The Socialist Party (PSOE) wants a People's Party (PP) councillor to resign after a newspaper reported that police had arrested her husband. It also wants Mayor Rafa Triguero to explain publicly whether she will remain in his governing team.

The PSOE cited a report by La Voz de Ibiza saying the husband was among those arrested in an operation by Spain’s National Police and Civil Guard. The operation broke up an organisation suspected of bringing cocaine into Europe and using luxury estate agencies to launder money through villas in Eivissa, Marbella and Madrid.

The party says the councillor should also give up any decision-making responsibilities at the council. It wants Triguero to set out what steps he will take.
