Palma turns empty Son Oliva premises into community hub

An abandoned premises in Son Oliva, Palma, is set to become a community hub after Palma City Council approved the conversion on Wednesday, 16 September 2026. The new centre, known locally as a casal de barri, will include a multi-purpose hall, two further rooms, a reception area and service spaces. The council also approved work at Voramar Park in Sant Agustí and nearby streets.

The Son Oliva building will get ramps to improve access. Its plumbing, telecommunications and lighting will be renewed, while thermal and sound insulation will be fitted.

Voramar Park will receive new children's play equipment. A barrier will be removed to make the space "more spacious and orderly" and improve movement through the area.

The project also covers Nostra Senyora de Lourdes, Escòcia and Irlanda streets, as well as Camí de Son Toells. Roads will be resurfaced and rainwater collection improved. A roundabout is planned on Irlanda street to allow safer turns towards Joan Miró street.

Palma has also set aside 500,000 euros for LED lighting at CEIP Aina Moll, CEIP Miquel Porcel, CEIP Santa Isabel and CEIP Son Anglada. The council says the work will modernise the schools and improve energy efficiency. City spokeswoman Mercedes Celeste said work had been carried out at around thirty education centres during the summer.
