Menorca conservatory gets fast-track status in Maó

Menorca’s planned Professional Conservatory of Music and Dance in Maó has been given fast-track status. The Balearic Government approved the designation on Friday, aiming to speed up the administrative work needed for the build. The new centre will stand on publicly owned land given free of charge by Maó Town Hall to the Ministry of Education and Universities.

The Balearic Institute for Educational Infrastructure and Services will build the conservatory. Its planned investment is eleven point seven eight million euros.

A design competition is already in its second phase. Three finalists — UTE SUMA, Peris Toral, b720 Arquitectura SLP and BASIC-AAP SLP — are preparing their initial designs. A jury will choose the winner on architectural quality, practicality, environmental sustainability, technical feasibility and how well it meets the centre’s teaching and arts needs.

The building is planned to have 3,764 square metres above ground and a further 1,507 square metres in the basement. Plans include an auditorium, a multi-purpose hall, a library and specialist classrooms for music and dance.

Music courses at elementary and professional level are currently taught at the Claustre del Carme, which the government says no longer has enough space for present needs. The new conservatory is intended to widen the offer and, for the first time on Menorca, provide elementary and professional dance courses alongside music teaching.
