Menorca airport gets €170m but no new control tower
Menorca Airport is set for €170 million in investment, but its new airport regulation plan leaves out a replacement control tower. The omission is in the DORA 2027-2031 plan, and Menorca’s PP raised the issue on Wednesday, 16 September. The party is urging the central government to ask Aena to add a conventional control tower to the plan.
DORA is the document that sets airport regulation. The PP says the Spanish parliament’s Joint Committee on Island Affairs had already unanimously backed the tower on 17 March, with PSOE votes included.
Cristóbal Marqués, the PP’s Menorca president and a senator, said the decision disregards both the island and the parliamentary agreement. He has also called on PSOE Menorca secretary-general Pepe Mercadal to say what he will do after voting for the proposal.
The party points to recent water leaks at the existing tower, which it says have again exposed shortcomings in a facility essential to airport operations. Marqués said Menorca had previously pushed back against replacing the physical tower with a virtual control system.
The PP says it will keep pressing for the new tower to be built. Marqués argues that the €170 million airport investment must include an answer for what he calls a key piece of infrastructure.
