Mallorca posties cover three districts in Correos protest

Postal workers protested outside Correos’s main office in Palma on Thursday, accusing the public postal company of leaving Mallorca badly short-staffed. The Central Independent and Civil Servants’ Union (CSIF) says delivery staff on the Balearic Islands can be made to cover three districts, sometimes on foot. It says that can treble a postie’s normal workload.

CSIF says Correos has failed to deliver an agreement to strengthen staffing, introduce a 35-hour week, turn part-time jobs into full-time posts and begin a plan to bring younger workers into the workforce.

The union says more than 22,000 Correos jobs have gone over the past 10 years because extra staff were not hired. Of the company’s 44,000 workers, it says more than 4,000 are part-time and earn less than 800 euros.

Mallorca staffing gap

On the Balearic Islands, 200 jobs have disappeared in just two years, according to CSIF. María Antonia Tarongí, CSIF Correos spokeswoman on the islands, says the short, insecure contracts make it almost impossible to recruit staff.

The pressure is showing in the workforce, the union says. Since 2019, sickness absence has risen by 60% and workplace accidents by 33%.

Part-time staff asked to work extra

CSIF says 70% of part-time contracts are concentrated in post offices. Those same staff are then asked to work additional hours, it says.

The union is calling for full-time jobs, greater stability and contracts that are more attractive to workers.
