Mallorca: Costa attacks Sánchez government over judges

In Palma, Mallorca, Balearic vice-president Antoni Costa calls for an end to “Sanchismo” — the approach associated with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez — as a row over judges reaches the Balearic Parliament on 13 October. Costa, who is also the Balearic government’s spokesman, is answering a question from Vox spokeswoman Manuela Cañadas about how the regional government could protect judges in their work.

Costa accuses Spain’s central government of dividing the country and discrediting the courts. He criticises talk of a pardon for former attorney general Álvaro García Ortiz before the end of the parliamentary term, and calls for a Spanish government that respects judicial independence.

He also claims the PSOE is being investigated over alleged funding of efforts to remove a judge who had investigated David Sánchez, the prime minister’s brother. Costa says the judge was simply doing her job.

Cañadas says anti-corruption prosecutors could investigate indications that PSOE money was used in the alleged effort. She asks who paid Leire Díez, whom she describes as a PSOE fixer, and whether anyone knew what Díez was doing.
