Mallorca's Crist Rei: council blocks urgent debate
In Felanitx, Mallorca, councillors block an urgent debate on protecting the Crist Rei monument at Puig de Sant Salvador on Monday. A researcher has asked for its possible removal to be examined because it bears Falangist symbols. The proposal to hold the debate comes from Vox councillor Maria Vidal, who casts the only vote in favour; councillors from the PP, El PI and BLOC per Felanitx vote against it.
The researcher's request has the backing of Memòria de Mallorca and 33 other people. It asks the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory to consider whether the monument should be removed. Vox wants the authorities to preserve Crist Rei in its current position and reject its removal, relocation or demolition. Vidal calls the council vote “a real disgrace”.
Felanitx deputy mayor Jaume Montserrat of El PI says the parish priest asked councillors to give the Church time to put forward its case. Mayor Catalina Soler of the PP says the request to examine removal has only been accepted for processing. She says the Bishopric of Mallorca and the priest do not want further debate for now.
Soler suggests Vox bring its proposal back once the ministry has responded. The council could then discuss it.
