Mallorca archive protects Darder maps and notebooks

Maps, field notebooks and photographs from the Darder collection have moved to the Arxiu del Regne de Mallorca. The Balearic education and universities department transferred the material to give this documentary and photographic record better protection. It had been held at the Directorate General for Universities, Research and Higher Artistic Education in Parc Bit since the Islands received it in 2007.

The archive now gives the collection its own technical conditions for storage, preservation, cataloguing and consultation. It has specialist resources and procedures for handling document collections, and access to the material is set to be eased gradually.

The collection records the work of Bartomeu Darder i Pericàs, a veterinary surgeon, naturalist, geologist and science communicator. It covers his geological and hydrological work, his research and teaching, and his involvement with geology bodies and societies in Spain and abroad.

Among the material are books and journals on geology and other sciences, Darder’s own photographs, field notebooks, maps and posters. All of the field notebooks are already available through the Legado Darder digital portal, alongside some handwritten documents and material linked to the XIV International Geological Congress of 1926.
