Mallorca data centre backs up Balearic public services
In Palma, Mallorca, the Balearic Government has switched on a new data centre designed to keep public digital services running when disruption strikes. The centre, known as a CPD in Spanish, works alongside the Government’s existing facility in Sant Pere. Together, the two sites can each take over 100 per cent of the administration’s technology operation.
The new centre is intended to hold critical systems for the Balearic Government and the IBSalut health service. The Government says running the infrastructure itself keeps citizens’ data and sensitive public information under its own control.
Two sites ready to take over
The new CPD and the Sant Pere centre operate as one distributed, duplicated technology platform. If one site cannot operate, the other is designed to carry the full technical workload.
That arrangement is meant to keep digital public services available through unforeseen incidents. The Government says the facility offers availability of more than 99.982 per cent, using standards equivalent to Tier III.
Maintenance without shutting services down
Duplicate electricity, cooling and communications systems allow maintenance work to be carried out without affecting digital services, according to the Government. The technical core is also kept completely separate from supporting technical areas, a layout intended to cut operational risks.
The centre uses high-efficiency climate control and a closed cooling circuit that does not consume water.
