Mallorca day centre brings families in to fight loneliness
In Marratxí, Mallorca, a day centre brings families and schools into its work to help older people stay connected. The Brot de Gínjol centre also gives those who use it more say in decisions about their care. On Friday, 23 October, the Council of Mallorca gave Marratxí council a good-practice award for opening the centre to the wider community and tackling unwanted loneliness.
Families and carers can join workshops where they support one another. The centre runs activities with schools that bring generations together, alongside work on respectful treatment of older people, loneliness and age discrimination.
The project also builds support networks with organisations beyond the municipality. According to its assessment, the approach has strengthened the independence of people who use the centre and improved support for family carers. It has also raised awareness of older people’s rights and needs among professionals and the public.
