Mallorca day centre plan stalls as roof section falls
A fallen section of roof raises concerns for pedestrians in Sant Jordi, Palma, Mallorca: the building is meant to become a day centre, but the project has stalled. MÉS per Palma reported the damage at Ca ses Monges on 2 November 2026 and accused Mayor Jaime Martínez and the Balearic Government of failing to move the project forward.
Bought, but not converted
In the previous legislative term, €1 million was set aside to buy Ca ses Monges and develop the day centre. Palma City Council completed the purchase in February 2026, after delays, for €682,327. MÉS says the Balearic Government is responsible for construction through the Consortium for Social and Healthcare Resources and Assistance.
Thirty places planned for 2030
MÉS member of the Balearic Parliament Marta Carrió has tabled a non-binding motion calling for the council and government to sign an agreement so work can begin as soon as possible. MÉS says the 2026–2030 Social and Healthcare Infrastructure Plan puts the start of planning procedures in 2027 and completion in 2030. The day centre is planned to have 30 places.
Carrió says families need the centre now, and that each year without it makes caring for older people in Sant Jordi harder.
