Three Mallorca day centres built but still shut

Three completed day centres in Mallorca remain closed in Sóller, Palmanova and Maria de la Salut. On Thursday, MÉS per Mallorca demanded opening dates from the Consell de Mallorca, the island council. The party says older people and their families are still waiting for services in buildings that are already finished.

MÉS councillor Rosa Cursach said they needed to know when they could use the centres, rather than hear excuses or see the council and town halls pass responsibility between them. She called on the council’s ruling PP party to coordinate the authorities involved.

Approval paperwork has stalled

Cursach asked in July about the formal approval, known as accreditation, needed for all three centres. The Institut Mallorquí d'Afers Socials, Mallorca’s social services institute, said it had received no accreditation application for either Sóller or Maria de la Salut.

Palmanova has applied, but the institute dropped the application without explaining why, according to MÉS. Cursach said the decision could be linked to work needed after storm damage.

No opening timetable

MÉS says the paperwork is not moving forward and no one has set out when the centres will begin providing services. The party accused the Consell de Mallorca of failing to do the coordination work expected of it.

Cursach said Guillermo Sánchez, president of the Institut Mallorquí d'Afers Socials, had told her he does not coordinate with town halls and therefore cannot know when the centres will open. She called that particularly worrying because the situation also affects municipalities run by the PP.
