Mallorca backs deaf rights as Palma turns turquoise

A commemorative banner now hangs from the Palau del Consell in Palma, Mallorca, as the island marks International Week of Deaf People. Consell de Mallorca president Llorenç Galmés put it up on 21 September 2026, while the building will be lit turquoise throughout the week. The move puts deaf rights, accessible communication and recognition of sign languages at the centre of the campaign.

Galmés said making communication accessible meant safeguarding rights. He said deaf people must be able to deal with public bodies, get information and use public services on equal terms.

The Consell de Mallorca says it has worked for more than 20 years to make its communication accessible in sign language. Its measures include a sign-language interpreting service and magnetic loops to help people with hearing disabilities access information and communication.

The week, promoted internationally by the World Federation of the Deaf, focuses this year on human rights for deaf people. Its next key date is Wednesday’s International Day of Sign Languages, proclaimed by the United Nations.

This year’s events also coincide with the 75th anniversary of the World Federation of the Deaf and the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
