Mallorca university awards Denise Gastaldo honorary degree
On Mallorca, the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) honours Toronto researcher Denise Gastaldo with an honorary doctorate on Friday. The day begins with a fig tree planting in the university gardens before the award ceremony at Son Lledó. UIB rector Jaume Carot and Balearic government president Marga Prohens will preside over the ceremony, the university says.

The planting starts at 10.30am between the Margalida Comas i Camps and Beatriu de Pinós buildings. Gastaldo will also sign the university’s book of honour. The award ceremony begins at noon in the assembly hall at Son Lledó and will be streamed live on UIB’s YouTube channel.
Why Gastaldo is being honoured
Gastaldo is a professor in the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Nursing. For more than three decades, she has studied how social and economic inequality affects people’s health and living conditions. Her work includes research into migrants’ working lives and unequal access to healthcare.
UIB’s governing council approved the honorary doctorate in December 2025 after a proposal from its Department of Nursing and Physiotherapy. Gastaldo has given talks, seminars and workshops at the Mallorca university and helped support its young researchers.
