Menorca plans desalinated water for two tankers at once
Two tankers at once: a planned loading point beside the desalination plant in Ciutadella, Menorca, would let lorries collect desalinated drinking water for delivery. On 3 October 2026, the Balearic government began the procurement process for the works, budgeted at around €485,000. It would be the island’s first facility of its kind, according to the Balearic Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle.
How the tankers would fill
Water would travel from the plant’s storage tank through a new pump and a pipe of approximately 150 metres to a separate outdoor loading area. Two loading bays would allow tankers to fill at the same time.
Authorised users would use cards linked to their vehicles and select how much water they need. Meters would record each delivery, while the site would also have remote controls and video surveillance.
Why the government wants it
The tankers would carry water to places that need this form of supply, including where existing connections to distribution networks cannot meet demand on their own. The government says using more desalinated water could replace some groundwater extraction and ease pressure on Menorca’s aquifers.
The ministry has not given a date for the loading point to open.
