Mallorca plans 7,500-cubic-metre desalination reserve

Mallorca’s Andratx desalination plant is set for a third production line: it could produce 7,500 cubic metres of water a day when needed, strengthening supplies for Andratx and Calvià. The Balearic government included the plan in a water programme announced on Wednesday, 30 September 2026.

A backup for Andratx and Calvià

The new line would normally stand ready as a reserve. When it runs, the plant would need less water from the Son Pacs reservoir, leaving more available for other needs on Mallorca.

Once energy improvements to the two existing lines are complete, the plant’s planned maximum capacity will be 22,500 cubic metres a day. The Balearic Agency for Water and Environmental Quality is arranging the contract to draw up the expansion project, including its environmental documents. A technical estimate puts construction, site supervision and safety coordination at 8.2 million euros.

Wider spending on water

The Andratx expansion is one of 14 water projects across the Balearic Islands backed by 39.8 million euros from the tourist tax for 2026–2027. The programme also covers municipal pipes, wastewater treatment and equipment to detect water losses.

Nearly eight million euros is earmarked for sewerage and treatment, including a new wastewater plant to replace the existing one in Portinatx, Ibiza. Another 5.6 million euros will pay for meters, sensors and communications equipment to help spot problems and plan water use.
