Mallorca honours Michael Douglas: Diada in Palma
Michael Douglas becomes an adopted son of Mallorca on Saturday, 12 September, as Palma stages the island’s Diada celebrations. The actor receives the honour at the Teatre Principal de Palma at about 19.00, after a day centred on King Jaume II.
The day begins at 10.30 at Santa Eulàlia church in Palma with a recreation of Jaume II’s coronation. It marks 750 years since the death of Jaume I and recalls the birth of the Crown of Mallorca. Llorenç Galmés, president of the Council of Mallorca, and Parliament president Gabriel Le Senne are among those due to attend.
Service and tribute at Jaume II’s tomb
A religious service follows at 12.00 in Mallorca Cathedral. Marga Prohens, president of the Balearic Government, joins the delegation, which Antoni Vera, dean-president of the cathedral, receives at the main entrance.
The Cathedral Chapel Choir and the ministriles will then perform Mallorca’s anthem, La Balanguera. Its musical version turns 100 this year. The morning ends with flowers laid at Jaume II’s tomb.
Island honours handed out in Palma
Douglas is joined by artists Rels B and Concha Buika, who are named Mallorca’s favourite son and favourite daughter. The Council of Mallorca is also awarding its 2026 prizes, honours and distinctions.
The Medal of Honour and Gratitude goes to Antònia Rosselló, Fundació La Sapiència, Antoni Vidal Ferrando, Toni Ballador, Hipercentro, Can Company, Grup d’Empreses Roig, Cucorba, Miguel José Deyà Bauzà, Montserrat Pons i Boscana, Federació Balear de Tir de Fona and Tomeu Penya. Tomàs Martínez, Pere Sampol and Antònia Matamalas receive it posthumously.
Jaume II prizes go to Encesa pels Drets Humans, Isabel Calero, Bar Bosch, Gremi de Margers de Mallorca, Miquel Ballester Julià, Asnimo, Colegio Madre Alberta, Regimiento de Infantería Palma 47 and Joan Mas i Vives. The awards are the Council of Mallorca’s highest recognition for people and groups contributing to the island’s development and standing.
