Spain's €0.20 diesel aid: PP demands more for farmers

Madrid: Spain’s €0.20-per-litre diesel aid is too little for farmers and fishing crews, the opposition Partido Popular (PP) says on 30 September. It wants the government to change its emergency decree on price rises linked to the war in Iran.

The PP says figures supplied by the affected sectors show fuel prices up by an average of more than 60% for agriculture and 86% for the fishing fleet. Its economic deputy leader, Alberto Nadal, and agriculture and fisheries coordinator, Carmen Crespo, want Spain to use the full allowance permitted by the European Union to cover up to 70% of the rise in fuel and fertiliser prices.

The party also wants a system that stops farmers, livestock keepers and fishing crews having to pay diesel costs upfront. It is calling for zero value added tax on basic foods, including fish, milk, cheese, oil, eggs, fruit, vegetables, meat and preserved foods.
