Mallorca opens 10-place home for severely disabled children

Ten places are now available at La Nola in Marratxí, Mallorca, for children and young people with severe disabilities. The new 24-hour residence, opened on Saturday at the Aspace Baleares Foundation, is the first specialist home of its kind on the island. Children can stay for one or several days while professionals meet their individual care needs.

The roughly 800-square-metre home has single and shared bedrooms, communal spaces, rest areas and adapted outdoor space. A second new residence, Sa Talaia, provides another ten places for adults.

A break for families

The stays are intended to give families time to deal with other responsibilities or take a needed break, knowing their children are being cared for safely.

Anja von Enden launched the project with her husband James. Their daughter, who had cerebral palsy, died in 2021 aged seven. Their experience showed them how difficult it can be for families to find qualified care and reliable respite support.

Von Enden said many families on Mallorca need that help but cannot afford to hire a private carer.

Funding for both homes

Starting the two 24-hour residences at the Aspace Baleares Foundation required an estimated €900,000. Private donations, contributions in kind and support from local businesses covered a significant part of the cost.

The Spanish central government has committed a total of €3.1 million over ten years for La Nola and the adult residence Sa Talaia.
