Mallorca: Call for law to rescue pets in disasters
Palma, Mallorca: More than half of households have pets, yet public emergency services lack specific procedures to search for and rescue animals, the Franz Weber Foundation says. On 21 October 2026, it calls for a law covering animal rescues during disasters and severe weather.
The foundation cites central government figures showing more than 15.1 million pets in 2025, up 14 per cent from 2021. It says animal rescues depend more on the goodwill of firefighters and security forces than on planned resources.
Portugal and Colombia have already passed laws covering animal rescue in such situations, the foundation says. It wants institutions to plan for the growing number of pets before emergencies happen.
