80-hour course: Palma tackles doctor burnout
An 80-hour course to tackle doctor burnout starts in Palma, Mallorca, in October 2026. The Balearic Islands Medical Association (Comib) has launched Escuela Cura Vita to prevent professional exhaustion and support doctors’ wellbeing. Its first five-month programme runs until February 2027.
Comib says studies show that between 40% and 45% of doctors in Spain have symptoms of professional exhaustion, often called burnout. It says the problem has worsened since the pandemic and can affect doctors’ physical and emotional health, the quality of care and patient safety.
The course is led by doctors Maria Antònia Andreu and Belén González. It includes three in-person retreats in calm settings, 16 online sessions, individual support, digital follow-up tools and a personal plan for lasting self-care.
Sessions will cover self-awareness, mindfulness, compassion and self-compassion, preventing vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue, and lifestyle medicine.
Escuela Cura Vita is also part of a scientific study. Participants will be assessed before the course, after it ends and again a year later, measuring how it affects their wellbeing and professional quality of life.
