Doctors’ strike cancels 86,957 Balearic appointments

A nationwide doctors’ strike has led to 86,957 cancelled appointments and procedures across the Balearic Islands over 31 days. The cancellations include 53,677 hospital specialist appointments and tests, 2,146 operations and 31,134 primary care appointments. The figures come as public hospitals report treating more patients than last summer.

Hospital work rises despite disruption

Public hospitals across the islands handled 11,948 more specialist consultations between June and August than in the same period last year, a rise of 11.6%. They also carried out 581 more operations, up 4.1%.

From June to September, hospitals recorded 114,736 outpatient consultations, compared with 102,788 a year earlier. Operations rose from 13,914 in summer 2025 to 14,495 this year.

More emergencies and greater demand

August alone brought 4,144 more emergency cases than the same month last year. The Balearic Health Ministry said public hospitals had increased the resources available.

The ministry linked the pressure on services to continued growth in the resident and temporary population, along with an older patient population needing more care. The strike disruptions added to that strain.
