Doctors' strike delayed, Madrid march set for 21 November
Madrid, Spain: doctors postpone indefinite strikes planned for October but set a 21 November march from the Spanish Ministry of Health to the Congress of Deputies. The strike committee changes course after an election is called for 29 November. It says the march will keep doctors’ demands in view before the vote.
The committee brings together the Spanish Confederation of Medical Unions, the Andalusian Medical Union and the Basque Country Medical Union. They want the next government to negotiate with doctors’ representatives over the Estatuto Marco, a framework statute covering their working conditions.
Over the next two weeks, the committee will seek meetings with every political party and ask for firm commitments. Those meetings could continue into the second week of November, when it plans to present a document setting out demands it considers non-negotiable. They include a separate negotiating framework and statute, professional classification, working hours, on-call duties and retirement. The unions say parties must make their positions clear before the election.
