Doctors' groups delay strike and plan Madrid protests
Madrid, Spain: two alliances of doctors and medical professionals are planning protests after postponing an indefinite nationwide strike. The Unión Médica y Facultativa (UMYF) and the Agrupación por un Estatuto Médico y Facultativo (APEMYF) announced the plans on Friday, 16 October 2026. They want a professional statute put on party agendas before Spain’s general election.
The alliances say they postponed the strike because they had no one to negotiate with. They now plan to ask the healthcare spokespeople of parties represented in the Congress of Deputies for meetings, and to press them to include the statute in their election programmes.
Their first gathering, called the “Night of White Coats”, is set for Saturday, 24 October, at 20.00 in the square at Madrid’s Museo Reina Sofía. On Friday, 13 November, they plan to put up posters at 00.01 bearing the message “Healthcare with doctors and medical professionals”. At 11.00 that day, they will hold an event to collect and share accounts from people in those professions about their work and demands.
The two alliances also plan to join a march on Saturday, 21 November, at 12.00. Organised by the Spanish Confederation of Medical Unions, the Andalusian Medical Union and the Basque Country Medical Union, it will run from the Ministry of Health to the Congress of Deputies. Afterwards, the alliances say they will join a public healthcare action organised by Sanidad Pública Segur@.
